Case Study — portraits
The Quiet Hours
An editorial portrait series about stillness — twelve sitters, one window, and whatever the afternoon light decided to do.
The Quiet Hours started as a studio exercise: what happens when you strip a portrait session down to a chair, a window, and twenty unhurried minutes? No shot list, no mood board, no music. Just the sitter and the light.
We photographed twelve people over six weeks — a retired teacher, a boxer, a bride-to-be, a stranger we met in the stairwell. Each session began with silence and ended, almost every time, with the frame we kept: the moment the sitter forgot the camera was there.
The series was later exhibited as twelve hand-printed frames and remains the best argument we have for slow portraiture.
I have never seen a photograph of myself that felt this honest. It's the version of me my closest friends know.
